CourseMate — Terms and Conditions

Please read these Terms and Conditions carefully before using CourseMate. By accessing or using coursemate.cards, you agree to be bound by these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

1. About CourseMate

CourseMate (accessible at coursemate.cards) is an AI-powered study tool that allows users to upload documents and generate flashcards and quizzes for personal revision purposes. CourseMate is an independent tool and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to any university, educational institution, examination board, or official academic body.

CourseMate is provided as a revision aid only. Nothing generated by CourseMate constitutes official academic advice, guaranteed exam preparation, or a substitute for professional educational guidance.

2. Acceptance of Terms

By creating an account, uploading any document, or using any feature of CourseMate, you confirm that:

  • You are at least 13 years of age (or the minimum age of digital consent in your jurisdiction)
  • You have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms and Conditions
  • You have read and agreed to our Privacy Policy
  • You are using CourseMate for lawful personal study purposes only

3. User Responsibilities and Uploaded Content

You are solely and entirely responsible for any content you upload to CourseMate. By uploading a document, you represent and warrant that:

  • You own the document or have the legal right to upload and process it
  • The document does not infringe any third-party intellectual property rights, including copyright, trademarks, or trade secrets
  • The document does not contain unlawful, defamatory, obscene, or harmful content
  • You have obtained any necessary permissions from the original author, publisher, or rights holder where applicable
  • Uploading the document does not violate any agreement you have with a third party, including your educational institution

CourseMate does not review, verify, or take responsibility for the content of user-uploaded documents. The onus of ensuring uploaded content is lawful, appropriate, and properly authorised rests entirely with the user. CourseMate accepts no liability for any consequences arising from content you upload.

4. Copyright and Intellectual Property

CourseMate respects intellectual property rights and expects users to do the same. You must not upload:

  • Copyrighted textbooks, journal articles, or publications without authorisation from the rights holder
  • Confidential institutional materials marked as restricted or for internal use only
  • Content belonging to another person without their explicit permission
  • Leaked or unauthorised examination papers or assessment materials

If CourseMate receives a valid copyright infringement notice regarding content you uploaded, your content may be removed and your account suspended without prior notice. CourseMate reserves the right to comply with applicable law including the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and equivalent legislation.

5. No Academic Guarantee or Warranty

CourseMate is a study aid powered by artificial intelligence. By using CourseMate, you acknowledge and agree that:

  • AI-generated flashcards and quiz questions may contain errors, inaccuracies, or omissions
  • CourseMate does not guarantee any particular academic outcome, examination result, or grade
  • Generated content should not be relied upon as the sole source of study material
  • CourseMate is not a substitute for attending lectures, reading source material, or consulting qualified educators
  • The accuracy of AI output depends entirely on the quality and content of the uploaded document

CourseMate expressly disclaims any and all warranties, express or implied, regarding the accuracy, completeness, reliability, or fitness for a particular purpose of any AI-generated content.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, CourseMate and its owners, operators, employees, and affiliates shall not be liable for:

  • Any academic loss, failure, or poor performance attributable to use of or reliance on CourseMate
  • Any loss of data, documents, or generated content
  • Any indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from use of the service
  • Any damage resulting from unauthorised access to your account
  • Any interruption, suspension, or discontinuation of the service
  • Any legal consequences arising from content you upload in violation of these terms

In no event shall CourseMate's total liability to you for any claim exceed the amount you paid for the service in the three months preceding the claim, or SGD $50, whichever is lower.

7. Prohibited Uses

You agree not to use CourseMate to:

  • Engage in academic dishonesty, cheating, or plagiarism as defined by your institution
  • Upload content for any commercial purpose without prior written consent from CourseMate
  • Attempt to reverse engineer, scrape, or copy CourseMate's systems or generated outputs at scale
  • Circumvent any access restrictions, paywalls, or account limitations
  • Upload malicious files, viruses, or harmful code
  • Impersonate another person or create accounts under false pretences
  • Use CourseMate in any way that violates applicable local, national, or international law

8. Account and Subscription

Free accounts are subject to usage limits as described on the pricing page. Pro subscriptions are billed monthly via Stripe. You may cancel your Pro subscription at any time — cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period and no partial refunds are issued unless required by applicable consumer protection law.

CourseMate reserves the right to suspend or terminate your account at any time if you are found to be in breach of these Terms and Conditions, without obligation to provide a refund.

9. Privacy and Data

CourseMate processes your uploaded documents solely for the purpose of generating flashcards and quizzes. Raw PDF files are not permanently stored — text is extracted and the file is discarded. Your data is handled in accordance with our Privacy Policy, available at coursemate.cards/privacy. By using CourseMate you consent to this data processing.

10. Third-Party Services

CourseMate uses third-party services including Supabase (database), Stripe (payments), Vercel (hosting), and AI providers to deliver its features. CourseMate is not responsible for the availability, accuracy, or policies of these third-party services. Use of CourseMate is also subject to the terms of these third-party providers.

11. Changes to the Service and Terms

CourseMate reserves the right to modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the service at any time without notice. We may also update these Terms and Conditions from time to time. Continued use of CourseMate after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms. We will endeavour to notify users of material changes via email or an in-app notice.

12. Governing Law

These Terms and Conditions are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Singapore. Any disputes arising from or in connection with these terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Singapore.
